3. The clinical interpretation tool

Currently interpretation of genotypic resistance tests is often performed using algorithms: collections of 'rules' relating certain mutations to categorical predictions of 'resistance' or sensitivity. This is a blunt and imperfect tool. The individual expert is often faced with the challenge of making therapy decisions based on reviewing a complex list of mutations.

The RDI was conceived in response to needs, expressed by researchers and physicians, for more standardized, accurate and reliable methods of genotypic interpretation and for interpretation based on virological response rather than phenotype (a measure of viral susceptibility of drugs derived from growing the virus under artificial conditions in the laboratory).

The RDI has been established to meet these needs and to 'improve clinical management of HIV infection' as defined in its mission. In order to deliver on this mission, the RDI ultimately intends to develop an interpretation system that will provide estimates of virological response to different combination treatment options that are derived from virological response data from clinical practice.
